The power of video

So, you’d think that this post is about virtual meetings, right? Sorry, but it’s not. A couple months ago we got our first company GoPro to gather some footage for one of our projects. Our idea was to use video as a medium to convey planning principles and regulations to non-planners. Simple hypothesis - a video would be a better way to show people how a city’s standards and regulations (specifically zoning) shape our physical environment. Zoning has a direct relationship to how you ‘feel’ in a space, but that concept is hard to explain to a room of residents or business owners. Enter, the GoPro. After spending a couple days shooting a community, I realized that the GoPro (or if you have a super steady hand, your cell phone) could be a game changer for the planning and development industry. There are so many ways we could use video to better engage with our clients, our communities, and our neighborhoods about planning development. Anyone who knows me, knows that tech is not really my jam (I still only use my phone for texts and calls) but even I can see that video should be a major tool in our arsenal moving forward. While we may not be starting a TikTok over here at SHC, we will definitely be integrating video into our projects moving forward.

Check out one of our videos from Brainerd – notice the sidewalks, setbacks, buildings, heights. A static picture could never convey the same amount of information.
