United Village
If you’ve driven past Allianz Field in Saint Paul lately, you may have noticed plumes of dust in the air and the raucous sounds of construction. After the completion of the stadium in 2018 (home of United FC), the 34.4-acre site stood quiet for several years (except, of course, during soccer games). Now, construction is underway to develop new retail space, office buildings, and a hotel. In 2016, the Saint Paul City Council approved the Snelling-Midway Master Plan, which outlined the development of a walkable neighborhood with active public spaces, a mix of uses, and sustainable stormwater infrastructure. More recently, the City approved six variances for the development to move forward. An accessible playground was also recently installed, and you can be on the lookout for a new giant loon sculpture later this year. The United Village is still in its first phase of development. Full build-out of the site is not anticipated for several years.
The project site is part of the Snelling Avenue Station Area Plan, which was adopted by the City of Saint Paul as part of the 2008 Comprehensive Plan. Since 2012, the Metropolitan Council and its subsidiary Metro Transit, along with the City of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Riverfront Corporation, have been collaborating to facilitate the redevelopment of the site and its surrounding area.
