A city that comes alive in the rain

Gothenburg, Sweden is a city where it rains 40% of the time. Instead of finding ways to adjust life around the rain, the City has decided to embrace it’s rainy reputation. According to the article Wetter the better: Gothenburg’s bold plan to be world’s best rainy city, Gothenburg has a couple local playgrounds that come alive in the rain. The playground has features that even when it’s raining, kids are excited to go outside! There are areas that allow puddles to form for jumping, lilpad shaped rain shelters, and a sandbox that allows kids to create rivers and pools. Gothenburg constructed these Regnlekplatsen, “rain playgrounds” as part of their plan to be one of the best cities in the Rain.

Gothenburg has several art projects throughout the city that use the rain, such as painting polar bear footprints across one of the City’s squares in a special paint that only shows up when wet.

One of the biggest features of Rain Gothenburg is a design for a new school, where rainfall will be used as decoration on the exterior of the building. The schoolyard will pipes to bring water from the roof into rivers that run to a “glacial area” with concrete blocks before draining to a natural marshland. There will even be a waterfall using rainwater. Check out the article to read about everything Gothenburg is doing to become the world’s best rainy city!
