APA 2023 Trends to Look Out For
The American Planning Association just published their “7 Need-to-Know Trends for Planners in 2023.” APA will publish their full list at the end of January, so keep an eye out for that! Here’s a short summary of the 7 trends to look out:
Addressing the biodiversity crisis. Nearly 44% of known species are at a high risk of extinction. Some trends you might see in your communities are pollinator gardens, reintroducing species (like Dakota County’s reintroduction of bison!) or community gardens.
Going to space! This might be a bit far reaching for a local municipality, but the APA predicts more space planning going on for governments and public entities.
Cargo bikes. Maybe you’ve seen some cargo bikes around the Twin Cities, I know I have. With the increase of bikes lanes and bike parking, the APA predicts more companies will utilize bike deliveries as part of their business plan.
Cities trying to find a balance between using surveillance tools and public trust. Cities have begun to use sensors, cameras and other tools that are for public safety and welfare, however these tools can also have an adverse effect on public trust.
Public space and gender. Planners will continue to have discussions about how to best make places inclusive for all.
The changing landscape of work. Work is continuing to change, and planners will have to be aware of the current landscape to best serve the public.
4-D printing! Basically, this is 3D printing that can respond to external stimuli, such as heat, light and pressure.
Do you agree with these trends? What other trends do you think will pop up in 2023?
